
And by lightweight, I mean it uses 2MB of memory, which is actually pretty small for a Mac application these days.

This allows it to be lightweight and fast. The browser window itself is custom in that it is written in Objective C and runs in an XPC service.

It also means that it can be customized to look pretty much like you want it to look, which is always a good thing. This allows you to grab the earth and manipulate it without having to use a whole bunch of different controls and dialogs. In short, it uses a component-based approach to display and navigate in Google Earth.
